The starting dose when using extended-release tablets is 5 mg daily up to a maximum dose of 20 mg daily. InteractionsCholestyramine may reduce the absorption and consequently the effect of glipizide. Therefore, glipizide should be administered 1-2 hours before cholestyramine is administered. Fluconazole (Diflucan) may increase the absorption and therefore increase the effect of glipizide. Side EffectsNausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation, upset stomach, headache, and weight gain may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Warnings RecallsPatients 65 years of age and older may have a stronger reaction to glipizide and may require a reduced dose. Glipizide is in the FDA pregnancy category C.
